Rocking response of structures with shallow foundations on thin liquefiable layers

چکیده
In the event of earthquake-induced liquefaction, structures with shallow foundations can suffer excessive settlement and rotation. this paper, rotational response resting on liquefiable layers thickness equal to or smaller than width foundation is examined through a series dynamic centrifuge experiments. Moment–rotation backbone curves are extracted corresponding evolution rocking stiffness increasing rotation depicted, in normalised terms. A attenuation relation proposed, which be used for simplified predictions maximum residual using spring dashpot models. Two such examples presented, one an iterative, equivalent-linear approximation, Masing's rules cyclic response, extended Pyke's hypothesis.

Effect of footing shape on the settlement of rectangular and I-shaped rocking shallow foundations
Cumulative settlement is one of the primary potential detrimental aspects of rocking foundations. It has been well documented that if the factor of safety against bearing failure is not very large (e.g., less than five or so), settlement can become significant. A series of footings of different shapes were subject to lateral slow cyclic loading on the centrifuge to study the effect of shape on ...
متن کاملRocking the foundations of molecular genetics.
I n PNAS, Nelson et al. present intriguing evidence that challenges the fundamental tenets of genetics (1). It has long been assumed that the inherited contribution to phenotype is embedded in DNA sequence variations in, and interactions between, the genes endogenous to the organism, i.e., alleles derived from parents with some degree of de novo variation. This assumption underlies most genetic...
متن کاملThe Effects of Shallow Tunnels on Nearby Structures
Nowadays, underground structures play vital role in developing different countries. Such structures are constructed in many civil activities such as development of road and railways, subways, water, gas and sewage lines, underground subways, nuclear wastes land filling, fuel storage and military installations. With an appropriate drilling method being selected, instabilities created in tunnels ...
متن کاملVariables Characteristics Effects on Static and Pseudo-Static Reliability-Based Design of near Slope Shallow Foundations
Given the concept of reliability-based design (RBD) and the growing risk management trend in geotechnical engineering, proper understanding and quantification of uncertainties are very important. The complexity of methods and a large volume of calculations of probabilistic design methods are the most critical reasons for civil engineers not to be comfortable using these approaches. In this rese...
